Drug company formulas did not work; they caused serious side effects (i.e., Premarin made from horse urine); insurance would only approve generic formulas which are inherently ineffective because the inexpensive binding ingredients interfere with the absorption of the active ingredients. Compounded formulas contain quality ingredients only and in the proper dose as I require; and, my requirements do fluctuate.

Compounded bioidentical hormone therapy has made a huge difference in being able to nail down the exact effective dosage needed to address negative menopausal symptoms while not exacerbating my chronic migraines. Instead of the one size fits all pharmaceutical dosage for estrace and progestin, the bioidentical HRT has been designed to fit the levels of estrogen and progesterone my body needs. The amount can be adjusted to maintain the levels that work best for me without side effects. The bioidentical works in conjunction with the synthroid medication. The pharmaceutical dosage caused loss of hair, dark skin pigmentation over the lips and on the knees, ringing in the ears, thyroid nodules developed and irritability/mood changes. After undergoing a recent DEXA scan, the gynecologist recommended I remain on the bioidentical hormones as the tests showed the density has been stable for several years with no new loss of bone. The gynecologist is not the doctor who prescribes the HRT but supports my doctors decision.

I had a hysterectomy in 2007 at the age of 55. I started taking Prempro, which I didn't like. The fact they were using horse urine was one of the reasons I stopped taking it. Plus I didn't like the way it made me feel and I try to limit what I take orally. I then started using estradiol patches and a compounding progesterone cream in 2008. I still use these today. I feel my hormones are balanced. I tried progesterone orally and didn't think it was doing anything. I can actually feel the cBHT progesterone cream working after I apply it. I have also tried other compounding pharmacy progesterone creams that didn't do anything. I don't have a uterus but using estradiol and progesterone makes me feel good. I have also tried just taking using the estradiol alone but always went back to getting the progesterone cream.

I can honestly say that BHRT has given me my life back and I don't want to ever live without it.
My menopause began in late 2015, but my desire for sex had been long gone by that time. Several years ago, I started using a compounded estrogen cream to address issues of vaginal dryness and atrophy. Then came the issues of sweaty, sleepless nights, weight gain, joint and chronic back pain, dry eyes, dry skin and mental lapses and osteopenia.
I started to educate myself about hormones and their importance for both menopausal symptom resolution and for ability to protect our breasts, brain and bones.
I believe that women's health matters and that we have a right to choose the method of hormonal treatment that works best for us. Men have many options for the treatment of low testosterone and sexual health, all of which are covered by health insurance. When will women be afforded that same right, which is long overdue?
I know I speak for many women when I beg you not take away our compounded hormones. I will gladly continue to pay out of pocket for the chance to feel whole, healthy and happy again. Thank you.

Not everyone benefits from the commercially available strengths that the medications come in and compounding allows to make dosage changes that make such a difference. I personally do best on a progesterone 30mg capsule, which is not available commercially. Also, I do not like dyes in my medications and compounding allows for dye-free pills.

I went into menopause earlier than most women, and my symptoms were severe. Night sweats, hot flashes, anxiety, dryness, severe mood swings and so many symptoms that made my life and my psychological state a mess.
I initially went to an OBGYN, who was unable to do anything for me. I was not interested in the standard Premarin drug that physicians give as it is a synthetic, and caused a lot of problems for my mother, and I avoid drugs like the plague. The misery continued.
I then tried alternative approaches, herbs, etc. and was still miserable. Everything in my life was impacted by my mood swings, my inability to sleep through the night and the awful hot flashes during the day when I was trying to conduct business meetings.
I was finally referred to an NP who was a women's health expert, that specialized in bioidentical hormones. After a few weeks of adjustments with a compounding pharmacy, I started feeling so much better, and now I feel great every day. It has been a miracle. I cannot say enough good things about bioidentical hormones- they have saved my life, literally. (I currently take very low doses of biest and progesterone and can't imagine what would happen to my body if I stopped taking them due to an ill-informed ban. Please do not prevent me from accessing my life-saving bioidentical hormones.
