As a physician who treats patients with cancer and complex chronic illnesses, I regularly prescribe compounded bioidentical hormones and I find them to be essential in clinical practice. Some patients simply require the highly individualized dosing that this form of administration can provide in order to manage their conditions optimally. Other patients who are highly allergic and/or reactive sometimes have difficulty tolerating standard prescriptions owing to adverse responses to any number of excipients that can be found in tablets and capsules. Compounding bioidenticals allows us to precisely formulate to suit individual needs, and it is critical that we maintain the ability to use these therapeutic tools in practice.
