I believe I would struggle greatly with even more weight gain and all the health issues that would come with that if I did not have hormone replacement. Many of my patients do not tolerate synthetic hormones, or do not tolerate the inert ingredients in hormone creams like premarin or estrace cream. I have also seen that patients who take hormones as creams tolerate them much better than when taken orally. Often I have to adjust doses of hormones that I prescribe on a regular basis and conventional hormone therapies do not allow me the same flexibility that using compounded bioidentical hormones do.

As someone who had Epstein-Barr virus, I began taking bioidentical hormones when I was pre-menopausal to help me sleep to help me keep my immune system function and help me feel better. After many years on bioidenticals, and once I was through menopause, my Kaiser doctor recommended I stop taking them. I worked with my acupuncturist to phase off them. About five years later, I wasn't feeling well much of the time and had been diagnosed with osteoporosis. My naturopathic doctor suggested I go back on bioidenticals. In addition, the recommendation was to add testosterone pellets to support my bones. After a year of testosterone pellet implants, there was a 5% improvement in my bone density (compared to a 12% decrease the year before). I am also taking compounded progesterone to assist with sleep and overall wellness and estrogen pellets to assist with vaginal dryness. My quality of life has been very positively impacted by compounded hormone treatment!
