United States

In the United States, millions of people depend on compounded medicines to live normal, productive, healthy lives. Their first-hand stories speak directly to the power of this important therapy. As the FDA considers removing access to certain medicines like compounded hormones, their voices must be part of the conversation.

“I started cBHT when I was pre-menopausal and struggling with...”

I started cBHT when I was pre-menopausal and struggling with PMS and PMDD and am now gratefully receiving cBHT during menopause. It has radically changed my life for the better! I feel more "myself" and able to function as a result of cBHT. How do I know? I had to go off of cBHT for a time to deal with another health issue, and it was scary for me and my husband. The chemical fluctuations in the brain that distort reality and cause severe mood swings, secondary to hot flashes/night sweats and insomnia are painful and embarrassing. Without cBHT, my waning hormones dictated my life and made me a prisoner of pain. With cBHT, I have a happy, healthy marriage and I am contributing to society through my work, and caring for family and friends with the energy I have left over. On a final note, personalized dosing also significantly contributes to the success of cBHT. It is notable when a dose is too high or low. I know I would suffer with a synthetic, one-size-attempts-to-fit-all substitute. Compounded, personalized, natural hormone replacement is the only appropriate and ethical option for many women the world over.

As a result of post menopause symptoms: fatigue, physical and mental, with resultant weight gain, foggy memory, loss of interest and overall no enthusiasm for life, I sought out help. I met with a physician with a specialty in functional and metabolic medicine who advised me of CBHT. I accepted the prescriptions about 15 years ago with great success. I became a better functioning employee, friend, daughter and parent. At the onset of menopause, five years earlier before I began with CBHT, I had been prescribed traditional HRT and did not see a difference in the quality of my life until I tried CBHT. This works well without the side effects of traditional HRT. Please do not take this away from me and others.

I had a stroke in 1993 so when I began to suffer from severe menopausal symptoms, the doctor refused to treat me with prescription hormones. Dr. Pam Smith assessed my case and began to give me bioidentical hormone therapy. For 15 years she has treated me. I went from being almost non functional to be able to travel and teach all over the world with my husband. My health and career were SAVED by Dr. Pam Smith's expert care. Bioidentical hormones rebalanced my body with NO side effects.

Several years ago, I was having a very difficult time. I had insomnia, night sweats, hot flashes, and severe anxiety, which I had never had before. I was gaining weight, specifically around my waist and was suffering from depression. I was having irregular menstrual cycles. I went to my PCP and she suggested we look at my hormone levels. My estrogen levels were very low. We decided to try hormone therapy to see if I would get some relief from these symptoms. I was not a good canidate for oral hormones due to issues with my liver, so we started with a hormone patch. If I remember correctly I think I used one patch every 3 to 4 days. I quickly began having a reaction to the adhesive in the patchs and could not tolerate them. My PCP then prescribed cBHT with Esterdiol and progesterone in it. It comes in a cream that I apply daily. Within a few weeks my symptoms began to resolve. I began sleeping well again, my anxiety resolved, night sweats mostly gone, hot flashes greatly improved, I went from 20 or more a day to maybe two. My depression resolved. My weight gain stopped. I wanted to live again. I remember saying to my PCP that if I had to live the rest of my life in this state that I'd rather not. I was sinking into despair. My life is greatly improved by these cBHT please dont restrict them or ban their use.

I have been using bioidentical hormone therapy for 12 years now. I had a hysterectomy that resulted in severe hat flashes. My OBGYN wanted me to take premarin, the same drug my mother took. I had bad perimenopausal bleeding. I was requiring oral iron supplementation as well as IV iron infusions. The bioidentical hormones were able to regulate my system and I no longer have irregular heavy bleeding. My iron stores are improving. My energy is returning and I am thankful I had this option of treatment instead of having an IUD placed or a hysterectomy. The bioidentical hormones were compounded for what my body needed and not a "one size fit all" dosing.

I was diagnosed with stage IV Metastatic Invasive Lobular Breast Cancer in March 2004, the month of my 57th birthday. I had bone meds only and was put on Letrozole and Zometa, then got a second opinion at my oncologist's recommendation with a BC specialist at U of MI Cancer Center. My treating oncologist and second opinion oncologist, and my gynecologist, all recommended that I use compounded testosterone cream, applied to the outer vagina, to help prevent vaginal atrophy and dryness. I am now on third line cancer treatment and have been on the compounded testosterone since sometime in mid 2004, and I have never had the vaginal itching and irritation that can be a side effect of E + breast cancer treatment and little atrophy. I would be extremely upset if the FDA no longer allows this RX med to be used by breast cancer patients on anti-estrogen treatments. I vote, I have met Senator Debbi Stabenow and my U.S. Rep. Fred Upton and will be communicating with them about this issue. I have learned how to be a patient advocate, I write well, and I will certainly be a strong advocate for this! (This questionnaire options for why compounded treatment was started does not include an option that fits me or anyone who started using compounded med be counteract side effects of cancer treatment, and continuing is now allowed without picking an option that does not reflect our experience--that is on you!)

I had to get a total hysterectomy because of endometreosis. My OBGYN said I had it so bad it looked like a bomb went off. I also have a chronic constipation problem. Whenever I take anything in a pill form, the binders and fillers make it so bad that I get constipated . Sometimes for five days. This is not good for my health as toxins are building in my system and can kill me. Plus it is very painful. This is why I need my hormones compounded or any other meds I might need in the future. I'm sure there are thousands if not millions of women, for one reason or another that have to get there hormones compounded. So please don't limit our access to hormone replacement.

After my hysterectomy, I couldn't sleep and had horrible hot flashes and night sweats. Some people who don't experience these symptoms tend to think those of us who do have these symptoms are exaggerating. I had to change my bedding 2-3 times a night because I would sweat so profusely that the bedding was soaked. My hair was so thin, you could see my scalp. I was going bald. It's difficult to be making a presentation at work while having a hot flash. It's extremely difficult to look professional while sweat is pouring down the sides of your face. Due to family medical history, traditional hormones are not an option. Without the compounded hormones, I feel disabled. It would be a horrible life.

Hear their stories, in their own words. Protect their access to compounded hormones.

On this page, we can only touch on the data that demonstrates the importance of compounded hormones to the lives of millions of women in this country. While the decision to take this vital therapy from patients and physicians might be profitable for the big pharmaceutical companies, it will be disastrous for the millions of patients that those same pharmaceutical companies cannot serve!

We encourage the appropriate committees in both the House and Senate to hold hearings on this critical issue.

Preserve compounded hormones.
