United States

In the United States, millions of people depend on compounded medicines to live normal, productive, healthy lives. Their first-hand stories speak directly to the power of this important therapy. As the FDA considers removing access to certain medicines like compounded hormones, their voices must be part of the conversation.

“Losing my mind and getting it back”

Went through menopause at 50; I work a demanding career as a Commercial Escrow officer. My recall and ability to work under pressure left me and I could not find any help from my regular primary care physician. I found a naturopath who tested me and said I was very lacking in my hormones, and set me up on a program. I was immediately better! I have been on them 10 years with no ill effect and have been working my demanding job the entire time. Please do not take away the only medication I take! (Besides my blood pressure medication.) Thank you!

“I had difficulty functioning each day...”

I was perimenopause prior to starting compound medication. I used compound through all 3 stages menopause and eventually
post menopause. Prior to starting compound medication, what I was on did not work. I was sluggish, lethargic, brain fog, flu symptoms, hot flashes and was emotional with some depression. Once I started the compound hormones and compound medication for thyroid, I found immediate relief with NO side effects. I have built a great trust with my compound pharmacy and it is pristine clean. Too many women rely on compound medication to relieve hormonal and other side effects of aging. I am very adamant women have the option for compound medication. It has saved me from horrible days.

“I had a hysterectomy when I was 36 years old”

I had a hysterectomy when I was 36 years old. Post surgery, I was always tired, moody, and had decreased libido. I started on traditional hormone replacement and experienced headaches, nausea, and other unwanted side effects. My gyn at the time started me on compounded HRT, the dosing based on hormone levels in my bloodwork. Compounded HRT allowed me to get exactly what I needed and nothing else. My dose has been reduced as I aged, reflection what would naturally happen to me without a hysterectomy. I am now 67 years old, with a wonderful quality of life. I am active (run half-marathons), remain happily married, and accomplished career goals after my surgery that I know would have been almost impossible without the support of this medication.

“If a hot flash could be described as an experience that lasts forever”

If a "hot flash" could be described as an experience that lasts, seemingly, forever accompanied by clothes-drenching sweats, eventual fatigue, adverse mentality and mood swings and a general feeling of depression and hopelessness, that would describe me long after menopause should have given way to some kind of stability most older women seem to achieve. Were it not for CBHRT my suffering in this way had no hope for relief. I am thankful my doctor knew about College Pharmacy (Colorado Springs) and their work with HRT. Without it I cannot imagine where I would be, today. This also goes for my husband who has suffered through this problem with me.

“I started having seizures at 14”

I started having seizures at 14, when I was going trough menopause I couldn't sleep for days and my seizures increased even with medication. Two weeks after being on a hormone pellet I was able to sleep all night and my seizures stopped. My neurologist said my hormones were the cause of my seizures that's why when I was balanced they went away. I have always had seizures with medication and they have never found anything wrong with any scans. Please don't take this away from us, it was very hard not sleeping for days. If you want to speak to me, you can. I think you would be very interested in my story.

“I had all the symptoms when I went through menopause”

I had all the symptoms when I went through menopause. Palpitations, depression, anxiety, insomnia and hot flashes. I started taking Prempro and it gave me headaches everday. In search for something better I found cHRT and never looked back. I've been on these hormones for 20 years. Since I've been on them I've never had a bad mammogram and breast cancer runs in my family. 69 years old and feeling great!

“While I've grown in wisdom over my 72 years...”

While I've grown in wisdom over my 72 years, I wish I had heard of bioidentical hormone replacement therapy decades ago. I was one of those women who experienced early on-set menopause in my mid- to late- 30's (in the 1980's), at the same time that the health of my father was failing due to Alzheimer's, and my step-mother's because of cancer. Both died a month apart in 1989. My early on-set menopause manifested as insomnia. I would fall asleep without issue, but then wake up a couple of times during the night. It got so bad that I would fall asleep, but then wake up 2 hours later. It would be another half-hour to 45 minutes before I would fall asleep again, then wake up 2 hours later--again, and again. One physician I went to for help did absolutely nothing--totally ignoring my pleas for help. A year and a half later, another physician said that my system had totally shut down, and prescribed Premarin on a daily basis for at least 3 months. This made a huge difference in my life. However, I certainly did not want to take a synthetic hormone for the rest of my life and risk breast cancer. When I was 15, my mother died of breast cancer. After I heard Suzanne Somers' testimonial about her use of bioidentical hormones, and read her book on that subject, I decided to investigate further. A physician in my area specialized in treating menopausal symptoms with bioidentical hormones. The effect was immediate! My depression lifted and I no longer felt that I was going to break out in tears at any moment. I slept through the night, dreamt, and woke up feeling like a normal person. Without access to bioidentical hormones, I don't know what would have happened to me. During those periods in my life when I changed jobs, or my company down-sized and I was laid off so that I could not afford the bioidentical hormones, my life changed dramatically. At this point, I wasn't sleeping at all--wide awake at night and only feeling sleeping around 8:30 AM. I would sleep for about 4 hours and wake up again. How could I hold a job with this kind of a sleep pattern--apply as a night desk clerk? When would I interact with my family and friends? At times suicide was on my mind as a way out. Fortunately for me, I got a job after being laid off for 24-months and have been able to afford my bioidentical hormones ever since. I am sleeping well, enjoying my day job, interacting with my family and friends as much as the pandemic will allow. For someone thousands of miles away making a decision that compounded hormones, or any compounded medication does not serve the public, I would ask: Just exactly what is your agenda and whom are you serving? Are you on the side of ordinary people whose medical needs are being met by compounded medications, or are you on the side of big pharma and their goal of ever greater profits?

“At the age of 43...”

At the age of 43 in 2003, I underwent a craniotomy to remove a pituitary cyst. During that surgey I lost pituitary function and became Adrennal insufficeint as well as steroid insufficient. I immediately began taking supplemental steroids and hormone replacement meds. After a few years I was still not feeling myself. My physical drive was sluggish. I had difficulty exercising for very long and as a result was losing my physical stamina and strength, both which are incerdibly important to prevent osteoperosis as well as to maintain long term emotional and physical health. My doctor mentioned that some replacing the normal testosterone level at my age my help. It really has made a huge difference for me and I have since been able to consistantly lift weights and do cardio workouts. This treatment is controlled and very effective. Please continue to provide this medication to prevent further health issues both physically,, mentally and emotionally. Thank you!

“I was having heavy, random, bleeding, was WIDE awake all night”

I was having heavy, random, bleeding, was WIDE awake at all hours of the night, having miserable, bed-soaking hot flashes and was crying daily. My compounded hormones completely turned my life around by healing me of all of the above. I tried a different type of hormone and they did not work for me. I also tried going off the compounded hormones after menopause but within 2 months, my body was again not sleeping, having hot flashes and signs of depression were evident. I honestly feel like the compounded hormones from O'brien Pharmacy have saved my life and given me a quality of life I cannot get any other way. I am a grandmother to 18 beautiful children. With the hormones, I am able to be a happy, healthy part of their life. I rarely cry now and I feel so good! I do regular testing and work closely with a practitioner to make certain the levels of hormones in my body are healthy and safe.

After going through menopause I didn't think there was a light at the end of the tunnel. I had brain fog, sleepless nights, high anxiety, vaginal dryness, etc. When I was placed on bioidentical hormones I couldn't believe the difference it made. I had been on premarin and other hormone replacements that didn't work. I felt very confident and comfortable taking these compounded hormone replacement therapy. They may have done a study but it doesn't mean anything to me unless you are on it.

“Greatly improved my quality of life!”

This type of therapy has greatly improved my quality of life! I have quite low testosterone, considered below the "normal" range, even for a male my age (late 30s). I suspect I've always had low T, but doctors would not test for that while I was in my 20s. Now I finally have a diagnosis from a reputable physician (my PCP). Before TRT, I had extremely low energy, no sex drive, and very foggy thinking--I could barely make it through a work day. Now, things are greatly improved, and I can't imagine going back!

Hear their stories, in their own words. Protect their access to compounded hormones.

On this page, we can only touch on the data that demonstrates the importance of compounded hormones to the lives of millions of women in this country. While the decision to take this vital therapy from patients and physicians might be profitable for the big pharmaceutical companies, it will be disastrous for the millions of patients that those same pharmaceutical companies cannot serve!

We encourage the appropriate committees in both the House and Senate to hold hearings on this critical issue.
