I was experiencing severe, disabling impacts from pre-menopausal hormonal imbalances (early luteal phase defect) and none of the many treatments that I tried among standard FDA approved medicines helped. In fact, most of them made things worse. Luckily, I found a doctor that provides personalized medicine services, and compounded bioidentical hormone therapy completely resolved the problematic symptoms, dramatically improving my quality of life. Prior to trying the compounded medications, which are not covered by my insurance provider, I tried normal prescription drugs - they simply weren't as effective and didn't lead to appropriate hormone levels as established by blood testing. While the standard hormone therapy drugs may work for many people, they do not meet everyone's needs. Losing access to compounded hormone therapy would be a crisis for me and many others, and is also critical as a component of personalized medicine more broadly.
