As a woman who has dealt with hypothyroidism for over 20 years and is now going through menopause I can tell you that traditional medicine has failed me. My thyroid was never really under control. This was ongoing for years and years. Throw menopause into the mix and I felt like I had lost myself.
And traditional cookie cutter generic medicine didn’t work for me- I was only getting sicker and sicker. After coming home in tears from yet another discouraging appointment with my doctor where I’m begging for help and only being told I was depressed I started googling for any kind of help outside of the norm that I could find. I was willing to drive any distance. I found my naturopath practitioner who also is a trained college educated nurse practitioner. I guess you could say I found the best of both worlds. Not only did she thoroughly test my thyroid not just the generic test that traditional doctors had been doing she also checked my iodine level which was nonexistent. No doctor not even an endocrinologist had ever checked my iodine. Even I know iodine and thyroid issues go hand-in-hand. Another thing that my naturopath nurse practitioner checked was my ferritin level which was dangerously high. Turns out I have a genetic condition called hemochromatosis that if left untreated can cause serious damage and sometimes even lead to cancer. I’ve never been checked for this by any of my medical doctors. A lot of my symptoms have been alleviated through therapeutic blood donation and my levels are now within range. My hormone and thyroid levels are also finally in optimal range -all of them not just some of them. For the first time in a really long time I feel good. I’m starting to get my energy back, my hair has stopped falling out, I’m not depressed. I am begging, begging you to please let things be for people like me who weren’t getting answers from traditional medicine. I believe in traditional medicine but I’m telling you in these areas it was not working for me and I am begging you on behalf of others I know like me and myself to just leave well enough alone. Let it be covered by our insurance. I’m fortunate enough that my husband has a good job and I can pay out of pocket but so many people can’t and I fear the day will come that I can’t pay for it. Compounded medicine and hormone replacement creams are very important to me. Please listen to people who are dealing with this in a personal level!
