In her own words: Margie

The call from my doctor came on October 3. I will never forget it. I thought they were calling to set up an appointment to take blood and check my hormone levels. Again.

Instead she said, “Can you come in for a sonogram?”

Margie and Rivers_7945-web-1-1I struggled for so many years to get pregnant. I lost an ovary when I was 23 and for too many years the obstacles to having a child just seemed so daunting. I tried the traditional manufactured drugs that my physician prescribed, month-after-month, for years — all with absolutely no result.

But I had some wonderful physicians at Honey, Houserman & Long. They never gave up. They never let me believe we wouldn’t find a way, though there were many, many times when I doubted that it would ever happen.

Eventually, they recommended I try something different because my body is unable to produce enough progesterone. My doctor prescribed compounded hormones from a local pharmacist, Smith’s Pharmacy. For months, I would go in and have blood drawn and my medication adjusted. In the end, I was taking a dosage 3x the strength that I began with — because that’s what my body needed.

And then, on that day in October, I got that phone call.

I went through all of the emotions. All the years of frustration and disappointment and hopelessness. It took such a toll on my family, on my life.

But I was going to be a mom.

Since my son was born, my holidays have been bigger. My days have been brighter. Everything is more joyful.

As I write this, he is trying on his graduation gown. It’s been 18 years since that phone call and he’s graduating high school and he is my life.

I believe in compounded hormones in my soul.

Hear their stories, in their own words. Protect their access to compounded hormones.

On this page, we can only touch on the data that demonstrates the importance of compounded hormones to the lives of millions of women in this country. While the decision to take this vital therapy from patients and physicians might be profitable for the big pharmaceutical companies, it will be disastrous for the millions of patients that those same pharmaceutical companies cannot serve!

We encourage the appropriate committees in both the House and Senate to hold hearings on this critical issue.
